Dominican Republic Volunteer Projects

Inspire and educate young children in the Dominican Republic while helping to build strong communities!

The Dominican Republic is a developing country facing the ongoing struggles of poverty. As a volunteer, you have the opportunity to work in Dominican communities that are handpicked by ISV and make a difference to the lives of hundreds of underprivileged children and families. Your efforts will focus on education (via the ISV Children’s Program) and the building projects for community infrastructure in rural areas. Many of these communities have no electricity or running water – everyday things that many people take for granted.

Children's Programs

As a volunteer, you will help educate children who have little access to everyday resources like books and pencils, and where there are never enough teachers. ISV has developed an ongoing program to supplement the underfunded public education system, where you will teach basic English, Math, Geography, Sciences and Health Education to children in a summer camp-like setting. Fun activities such as Music and Dance, Arts and Crafts and Physical Recreation are also incorporated into the ISV Children’s Program. The goal of the Children’s Program is to provide a platform for basic, quality education in a fun and dynamic learning environment for underserved children of the Dominican Republic. Each volunteer is asked to bring along their own skills and talents to make each lesson as fun as it is memorable.

Overview

Make a difference in a child’s life and change your own forever. This is the inevitable result of your involvement in ISV’s Health Education and Language Program (HELP) developed specifically for the children of the Dominican Republic. Poverty (defined as living on less than US$1 per day) is a significant global issue and a harsh reality for many Dominicans, compounded by the increasing number of refugees that cross the borders from Haiti. Access to education and health care are basic human rights that are considered necessary and are needed to help individuals break through the cycle of poverty. These rights are largely unrecognized or denied to many Dominican and Haitian communities. That’s where you can help us make a difference.

Dominicans are festive people who love to smile and dance, particularly the children. The result is magical when you combine these qualities with the energy and enthusiasm of volunteers, and an educational program that aims to improve health, hygiene and English language skills for children.

Built on a foundation of fun in a safe and comfortable environment, ISV’s carefully crafted program uses arts, crafts, songs, drama, dance and games along with dynamic English and basic education lessons to teach children aged 4-15 in numerous areas related to healthy living and personal development. Nutrition, hygiene, safety, prevention of cholera, dengue and malaria, as well as HIV-AIDS, are just some of the topics covered progressively with the children in selected communities.
With the support of the ISV Project Leaders, volunteers have ownership over the experience as you can incorporate your skills and ideas to develop lessons in accordance with the HELP’s learning outcomes.

A typical day might be breakfast at 8 am, spending the morning teaching ISV’s HELP program to children aged 5-9, followed by an afternoon session with older children until approximately 4:30 pm. After dinner, you may have free time or spend time as a group lesson planning, or participating in other educational activities. Volunteers alternate between construction activities one day, and the Children’s Program the next, with a minimum of two free days per two week project.

ISV has been running children’s programs in the DR since 2003. The HELP has been running since 2010 and is updated prior to the start of every season to address the needs of each community. Help us grow this experience so we can continue to support the people of the DR – one child at a time – by focusing on three incredibly important topics, health, language and primary education. This experience promises to impact you for a lifetime.

Project Overview

Elephants

1. Elephant Nature Park – Elephant conservation and habitat protection

Project

Volunteer jobs are varied, from bathing elephants to basic health care. Traveling around the country in a variety of modes, from 4 wheel truck to bamboo raft volunteers will experience local and tribal lifestyles, culture and hospitality

Background

The park was founded in 1996 with the aim of;
1. Sanctuary for endangered species: We provide homes for these animals as well as contributing to their welfare and development. By liaising with like minded Conservation and Environmentalist groups, NGO’s (Non Government Organisations) and other interested parties we are able to keep abreast of the latest techniques in health care and resource management.
2. Rain Forest Restoration: One of the most exciting developments at the park is our programme of tree planting the surrounding area. The ecological balance of plants and animals will be encouraged by the re-introduction of the rain forest. Some 25 acres of the mountainside will be planted every year for the first 5 years.
3. Cultural Preservation: To maintain, as much as possible, the cultural integrity of the local community. By creating employment and purchasing agricultural products locally we are assisting the villagers in sustaining their distinct culture. Park managers are recruited locally to oversee the park’s progress.
4. Visitors Centre : To educate visitors, individuals, study groups, schools and interested parties. Emphasis on the plight of the endangered local species will be presented in an entertaining and constructive manner. Future phases will include audio / visual equipment and other modern educational aids. It is anticipated that small conferences and workshops will be organised at the park.
5. Act independently : of pressure groups and political movements that we consider contrary to the well being of the park and the creatures in its care.

Monkeys

1. Wild Animal Rescue Foundation of Thailand – Phuket Gibbon Rehabilitation Project

Background

The sanctuary is located on Phuket an island off the south coast of Thailand; it currently houses over seventy gibbons. The aim of this project is the rehabilitation of gibbons back to their natural habitat additionally providing ongoing care to those unsuitable for repatriation, some of which are infected with communicable diseases. The minimum stay required is three weeks.

Project

The oldest and most famous of our projects is the GRP which houses a sanctuary dealing exclusively with gibbons many of whom have come to us by various means, from situations of abuse and cruelty. The GRP provides a refuge for these unfortunate animals who through no fault of their own have fallen victims to uncaring thoughtless humans. The sanctuary was created in the late nineteen eighties by people concerned about the large number of gibbons being exploited in bars and restaurants in the Phuket area. As they were being kept illegally the idea was to have them confiscated, house them at the sanctuary then release them into the forest.

2. Wild Animal Rescue Foundation of Thailand – Wild Animal Rescue Centre &
Animal Hospital – Lopburi

Background

The Wild Animal Rescue Center and The Lopburi Monkey Hospital takes in wild animals, many of which arrive in appalling conditions, confiscated from the illegal pet and animal trade. Our primary goal is to provide shelter for the animals so that the authorities have a place to take confiscated pets and victims of the trade. We hope to enlighten the lives of these animals by providing them with a secure and caring environment. We equally hope that by providing good care to the abused apes, monkeys and bears it will encourage more action to be taken against illegal trade.

Project

Volunteers work 6 days a week and 8 hours a day. The duties are to assist our resident veterinarians on basis animal hospital care. Also volunteers can help building and maintaining the cages, feeding the animals and observing their progress as well as educating visitors to the center about the project’s objectives. The sick and blind animals need a great deal of care.

Australia Volunteer Projects

Inspire and educate young children in the Australia while helping to build strong communities!

The Australia is a developing country facing the ongoing struggles of poverty. As a volunteer, you have the opportunity to work in Australia communities that are handpicked by ISV and make a difference to the lives of hundreds of underprivileged children and families.

Australia

Projects focus on Environmental Conservation

  • Habitat Restoration for Native Flora and Fauna
  • Australia: Wildlife Sanctuary
  • Endangered Spices Management
  • Rainforest Regeneration
  • Koala Bear Rescue Center

ACHIEVEMENTS

Since ISV’s children’s program began, we have had some fantastic achievements. These include:
  • Reaching out to over 4,000 children and youth at risk in 15 different communities through our educational Children’s Programs
  • Over twenty brightly-colored educational murals have been created by volunteers and students in the communal and educational facilities where the Children’s Programs are held
  • Lesson plans and activities that volunteers design are frequently adopted by school teachers and used throughout the school year, especially in the area of English language acquisition
  • Each ISV Children’s Program greatly enhances the learning environment through the wealth of educational materials that ISV groups donate to the schools and other educational facilities. Other legacies of the programs include lesson plans and activities designed by ISV volunteers that are then adopted by school teachers to use throughout the year.

The Dominican Republic

Projects focus on children’s health education and community development

  • Health education programs for impoverished children
  • Building homes for single parent families
  • Improving access to water and sanitation
  • Construction of schools and community centers
  • Recreation, sports, art & crafts activities
  • Community recycling and clean-up programs
  • Teach music, dance and theatre

Thailand Volunteer Projects

Inspire and educate young children in the Thailand while helping to build strong communities!

Sun-swept beaches, spiritual temples, smiling faces, lush tropical rainforests and tasty cooking are just a few of the wonders awaiting visitors to Thailand – but through volunteering with International Students Volunteer (ISV) you can be more than a tourist and address the needs of rural Thai communities and environments.

You can make a difference on one of ISV’s conservation projects, you could be working in rescue and rehabilitation centers for elephants, Asian black bear, gibbons and other animals. When it comes to community development, you can help tackle issues like human trafficking through providing support in centers for those at risk, or helping to maintain infrastructure and provide teaching assistance in Thai orphanages.

This exotic country has the perfect balance of culture and nature and it truly is a place that will capture your heart.

The goal of the Children`s Program is to provide a platform for basic, quality education in a fun and dynamic learning environment for underserved children in Thailand. Each volunteer is asked to bring along their own skills and talents to make each lesson as fun as it is memorable.

Background

The park was founded in 1996 with the aim of;

Thailand

Projects focus on both community development and Conservation

  • Improving the Lives of Children in Chiang Rai with education and health care programs
  • Endangered Elephant Conservation and Rehabilitation
  • Protection of Asian Threatened and Endangered Wildlife (Pre-Vet Available)
  • Children’s Outreach and Community Development
  • Cultural Exchange and Sustainable Development in Ethnic Thai Communities
  • Construction of schools, homes and community centers

Cambodia-Angkor Watt Excursion

A. OPTIONAL 5-DAY CAMBODIA EXCURSION

Cambodia is a fast growing tourist destination and there is a reason ISV selected this region of Southeast Asia for the location of our optional excursion package. At its peak, Cambodia’s Angkor Kingdom stretched from the Mekong in Vietnam to the south of what is now Burma (Myanmar). The 5-day ISV Cambodia Excursion aims to showcase some of the highlights of this “Pearl of South East Asia”, offering a taste of the ancient kingdom, enduring culture and ‘modern’ village life.

Overview

After your adventure in Thailand, you will have the opportunity visit Cambodia and experience a place like no other. You will spend six days exploring the area in and around Angkor Watt, coined as the eighth wonder of the ancient world and listed as a UNESCOs World Heritage Site. This mysterious and ancient place was the largest preindustrial city in world and has become an iconic image of exploration in South East Asia. ISV is pleased to offer this excursion for the first time in 2011 (on a limited basis) July 22 and August 19 departure dates only.

Siem Reap

Travel from Bangkok direct to Siem Reap, the gateway to the Angkor region of Cambodia. This small city is home to traditional Chinese and French colonial architecture and boasts an array of markets and craft shops. Enjoy walking around the markets and exploring this ancient city and in the evening, prepare for an evening out to eat and enjoy your first real tastes of Khmer (Cambodian) culture at the Apsara dance theatre.

Siem Reap-Angkor by foot

Today features a full day exploring the magnificent Angkor complex. After breakfast we start our tour visiting Angkor Thom, the 3km walled and moated royal city that was the last capital of the Angkorian Empire. Here we explore what was once a grand enclosed city that flourished from the 9th to 13th centuries. Within Angkor Thom are the giant stone faces of Bayon. After lunch, we will head to the most famous of all Angkor temples, the magnificent Angkor Watt. Visually, architecturally and artistically breathtaking, it is a massive three-tiered pyramid crowned by five lotus-like towers rising over 200 feet (65 Meters) from ground level. Enjoy a sunset from atop one of the many temples and/or return to the city for a free evening.

Siem Reap – Outer Temples by bicycle/hot air balloon

Today, our first stop is to Ta Phrom. This quiet, sprawling monastic complex is only partially cleared of jungle overgrowth. Intentionally left in a state of partial restoration, massive fig and silk-cotton trees grow from the towers and corridors offering some of the best ‘tree-in-temple’ photo opportunities at Angkor. Enjoy a guided bicycle ride around this majestic area of Ankor -home to several Hollywood movies including Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. In the evening, you will get a bird’s eye view of Angkor via a controlled hot air balloon ride!

Kbal SPlean waterfall and Floating Village

Today we take a tuk-tuk out of town to the 20m Kbal Splean Waterfall. A 45min hike leads us through the jungle to the site of water cascading over stone engravings. We settle for a picnic lunch before making our way to the Kompong Phluk Floating Village on the shores of Lake Tonle Sap-the largest freshwater lake in South East Asia and an ecological world hot, recently declared a UNESCO biosphere. Return to Siem Reap and enjoy dinner and a night out.

Siem Reap on horseback

This morning is free to discover the Psar Chaa (Old market) where everything from woodcarvings to table mats are sold. In the afternoon, we will journey by horseback to places that are otherwise unreachable, through local countryside villages, scenic rice fields and tourist-free temple ruins. An authentic taste of the real Khmer lifestyle viewed from horseback, and a welcome break from other tourists. Tonight we will enjoy an authentic Khmer dinner and farewell party on our last night before flying home the next morning.

Day 2 - Tuesday

Siem Reap – Temples – by horse and cart/tuk-tuk/a/c minivans, hot air balloon + lunch

A full day exploring the magnificent Angkor complex with English speaking guide.

After breakfast we start our tour visiting Angkor Thom, the 3km2 walled and moated royal city that was the last capital of the Angkorian empire. Here we explore what was once a grand enclosed city. Within Angkor Thom is Bayon. The giant stone faces of Bayon have become one of the most recognizable images connected to classic Khmer art and architecture

From here we take a break for a classic Khmer bbq to rest our tired legs before embarking on the most magnificent temple of all…

Angkor Wat. Visually, architecturally and artistically breathtaking, it is a massive three-tiered pyramid crowned by five lotus-like towers rising 65 meters from ground level. Angkor Wat is the centerpiece of any visit to the temples of Angkor. We watch the sunset over the temples from the viewing point

Dinner tonight is Cambodia’s National Dish ‘Amok’
